Green Bay Packers: 10 Players who deserve Pro Bowl nod
By Joe Kipp
Za’Darius Smith, OLB
One of the Packers’ prized free-agent additions this past offseason, outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith has been everything Green Bay bargained for and more. With 8.5 sacks through 10 games, Smith has already matched his previous career-high (8.5) from 2018. Additionally, Smith currently ranks second in the NFL in total quarterback pressures (57), according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
Preston Smith, OLB
As the other half of the Smith duo, outside linebacker Preston Smith was also signed to a lucrative contract in the offseason as an attempt to help the Packers’ lackluster pass rush, and it’s already paying off. Smith currently leads the team in sacks (10) and, similarly to Za’Darius, is having a breakout campaign in 2019. Smith even has a chance of breaking the single-season sack record for the franchise (16), currently held by Reggie White.
Kenny Clark, NT
Nose tackle Kenny Clark hasn’t been putting up eye-popping numbers, but he’s been one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL based on what he’s been asked to do. He may not make the Pro Bowl because he doesn’t have the name recognition, but Clark is having an extremely underrated season. Much of what he’s asked to do is swallow up double teams to free up the Packers’ linebackers. That said, he still excels as a pass rusher. Clark has 41 quarterback pressures so far this season.
Jaire Alexander, CB
Jaire Alexander started off extremely hot and appeared to be one of the NFL’s up and coming shutdown cornerbacks in the first three weeks. Though he’s been incredibly inconsistent, Alexander still deserves Pro Bowl consideration. The second-year corner only has one interception to his name, but ranks third in pass breakups (12) and leads the league in dropped interceptions (three), according to Sports Info Solutions.
