5 NFL free agents that should come home (and sign) for Christmas
Colin Kaepernick, QB
Best Landing Spot: Pittsburgh Steelers
When evaluating whether or not to sign Colin Kaepernick, the Pittsburgh Steelers should only view the decision through a lens of “maximizing the chance of winning.” Perhaps the Steelers have learned a valuable lesson after parting with superstars Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown only to watch their offense completely sputter out of control.
Sure, losing Ben Roethlisberger is a huge reason for their struggles, but that only helps to prove how badly they need to improve the depth at quarterback.
A decision to sign Kaepernick would absolutely come with drama but most would argue that he would absolutely improve the team’s chances of winning and making a playoff push. The Steelers have had an admirable turnaround this year, scratching and clawing their way back into contention after an 0-3 start to the season.
However, we’ve seen enough of Mason Rudolph to know that this team is winning in spite of his play, not because of it.
Andrew Luck, QB
Best Landing Spot: Chicago Bears
It’s a Christmas Miracle! I realize this one might be a fantasy and don’t even know if it’s legally possible. But if there was any way that the Chicago Bears could acquire Andrew Luck, it needs to happy — assuming he could be persuaded to come out of retirement. No matter the cost, the Bears and general manager Ryan Pace (if he wants to keep his job) should make the move if it’s possible.
Seriously, give Luck partial ownership of the team — whatever the cost. Because this team is built to contend for Super Bowls right now, and they’re at serious risk of the proverbial window slamming shut without ever having a real shot at competing simply because Pace missed the mark when drafting a franchise quarterback.
Dear Santa, please give the Bears Andrew Luck.
