Seattle Seahawks: Studs and duds vs. Vikings in Week 13
By Samuel Teets
Stud: Rashaad Penny, RB
After a noticeably slow start to the season, Penny has found a role in Seattle’s offense. The 2018 first-round pick saw very few opportunities early this season. He only had 36 carries entering Week 12. Since being drafted by the Seahawks, Penny has struggled to find his niche on the team. Chris Carson overshadows Penny in the backfield and Mike Davis also played better last season.
However, in the last two weeks, Penny has 29 carries for 203 yards and two rushing touchdowns. During that time, the Seahawks have just over 390 total rushing yards. With Russell Wilson and the receivers struggling, the running game has stepped up to fill the void.
Against the Vikings, Penny carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 33 more yards and another touchdown. The two scores double his touchdown total from the rest of the 2019 season.
Dud: Defensive miscommunication
Early in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks took a commanding 34-17 lead. With solid game management, the team should’ve secured the victory. However, less than one minute after the Seahawks scored the touchdown to reach 34 points, the Vikings scored.
Kirk Cousins took a deep shot to Laquon Treadwell, who was standing all alone. There wasn’t a Seahawk within 15 yards of the former first-round pick. He easily caught the ball at Seattle’s 26-yard line and ran in for a touchdown. It was a 58-yard strike that brought the Vikings to within ten points of Seattle.
On the play, Shaquill Griffin stopped tracking Treadwell and settled down into a zone. However, there was no safety over the top to guard Treadwell because Quandre Diggs shifted to cover a shorter route over the middle of the field. The Seahawks cannot give up such easy scores in the future.
