As we’ve already discussed, the Dolphins defense needs not just one player at virtually every position but also depth behind those players. Thus, after adding Gross-Matos in the first round, they dip into the pool of edge rushers once again by taking Jonathan Garvin in the sixth round.

The Miami product has some impressive physical tools and, if he can win right away off his jump, he’s lethal to opposing passing attacks. Where he needs to develop is in terms of aggressiveness and with his counter-moves. Even still, Garvin has the potential to develop into a high-quality player for Miami’s defense.

The fact that Denzel Mims was available at the end of the sixth round was far too enticing for me to pass up when playing the role of Miami’s general manager. This is a player that could very well be a Day 2 pick that’s dropping to the Dolphins at a position of need and could very much strengthen their offense.

Mims is an absolute nightmare for corners to cover one-on-one in 50-50 situations as his size, length and athleticism give him an out-of-this-world catch-radius. While he needs further refinement as a route-runner, he can be a complement alongside DeVante Parker and Bryan Edwards in the revamped passing attack.

At 6-8, 315 pounds, it’s safe to say that Charlie Heck is a mammoth human being. What’s intriguing, however, is that the Tar Heel offensive lineman lacks a bit of play strength at that size, something that he’ll need to address at the NFL level.

What Heck does well for his size is move, though. He’s a great athlete for a man his size. And as the Dolphins are in the seventh round looking for value, potentially improving their offensive line further with a project piece is a good look for them.
