As mentioned, my belief is that Derek Carr is not the guy for the Raiders as they make the move to Vegas. He’s far from a bad player but he gives this team a defined ceiling on offense and, as they look to start a new era, that needs to change. They make the change with their first selection in the first round as they take Justin Herbert out of Oregon, for whom the sky is the limit in terms of his potential.

Herbert still has his problems as a player. His decision-making can be called into question and he is still very much a toolsy prospect more than he is a finished product. But those tools are unbelievably enticing as he has the size, arm and athleticism that NFL scouts drool over. While he might not be ready to start Year 1 in Las Vegas, the Raiders can find their guy for the future in Herbert.

When I was making the Raiders second selection of the first round, Henry Ruggs III was still on the board. It took everything in my power to pass him up as the thought of the Alabama speedster working with Herbert is enticing. When you get down to it though, the greater need and just as good of value in terms of pick were still on the table, so I had to give Oakland Kristian Fulton out of LSU.

After trading Gareon Conley, the Raiders have relied heavily on the likes of Travyon Mullen. While he’s been up and down, the secondary still needs help moving forward. Fulton can be that as he checks every box to be a shutdown No. 1 corner on the outside with athleticism and size. He can be a boom to help the Raiders be less of a sieve against the pass moving forward, something they desperately need.
