Speaking of valuable roles, it feels as though most teams nowadays are really big on pass-catching tight ends. Most teams, except the Cowboys. Under Jason Garrett’s guidance, that role has been taken out of the mix as they prefer their tight ends to be blockers first.

That’s why Jason Witten lasted as long as he did, although he was the complete package in his prime. That’s no longer the case and there’s really no one on the roster ready to take on that role of a complete tight end in the mold of No. 82.

That doesn’t mean there’s no one worth using more often. Blake Jarwin had a slow start to his career but has taken off over the past two seasons. This year, was his most effective as a pro, finishing with 31 receptions for 365 yards and three touchdowns.

Jarwin isn’t one to offer much in the running game, but most coaches can figure out ways around that. Hopefully, Dallas will land someone who has more of a forward-thinking offense that takes advantage of Jarwin’s talent — and ability to beat up on linebackers in the passing game.

Should they allow him to leave, that would create a huge hole as Dalton Schultz would be the only tight end on the roster with any experience. Of course, they could always bring Witten back at 38-years of age — nevermind, Jarwin needs to be retained.
