4. Matt Rhule

Current Position: Baylor head coach

Full disclosure, Matt Rhule should be the top candidate for several other NFL teams looking to fill head coaching vacancies. When you look at franchises like the Browns and Giants, two clubs in dire need of a culture change, Rhule is an ideal candidate. The work that he first did at Temple and has now quickly done at Baylor is nothing short of remarkable.

For the Cowboys, however, the culture is not necessarily the issue with this team. Yes, they need something more than Jason Garrett clapping on the sidelines to motivate them and Rhule has shown in the college ranks that he’s capable of doing just that.

However, Rhule is not necessarily the Xs and Os type of candidate that many other guys that will be connected to being the Dallas Cowboys head coach are. And when you consider the shortcomings of Garrett in terms of getting this roster to reach their potential, you have to believe that a more pronounced emphasis will be placed on the fieldwork as opposed to the locker room. That knocks Rhule down slightly, though he’d still be a terrific addition in Dallas.

3. Greg Roman

Current Position: Ravens offensive coordinator

The one concern with Greg Roman as a potential NFL head coaching candidate is, essentially, the opposite of the worries when it comes to Matt Rhule. Roman has an impressive résumé of designing elite NFL offenses, most recently unleashing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens on the NFL in 2019 and helping to have them on a beeline for the Super Bowl, or so it seems.

Roman’s time with the San Francisco 49ers while Jim Harbaugh was head coach from 2011-14 is also notable as he helped lead that offense to tremendous success as well. The issue, however, is that Roman has still not held a head coaching job, which leads you to wonder if he has the motivational tools to be an NFL head coach.

That, of course, is merely speculation and something that we can’t truly know until he’s hired. With the way that Roman has performed with Baltimore, however, you have to marvel at the imagining of what he could do with Prescott, Elliott, this offensive line and the weapons around him. That is enough to make him a top-three candidate to be the next head coach.
