2020 NFL Draft: 12 Standouts from college football bowl season
10. Chazz Surratt, LB, North Carolina
The North Carolina Tar Heels stomped the Temple Owls into the ground, 55-13, in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27. The Owls couldn’t get anything going on the ground or through the air. The Tar Heel defense dominated with linebacker Chazz Surratt leading the way. His numbers were solid as Surratt made plays in the backfield with two tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks, finishing with four total tackles.
On the season, the 6-3, 230-pound linebacker made plays all over the field, ending the season with 115 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Despite being raw, the former quarterback is a natural at linebacker. He’s a great athlete who excels in coverage on tight ends and running backs alike.
Because of his length and good hand quickness, he doesn’t allow offensive linemen to get into his pads. He has a solid burst and great closing speed as a rusher. He’s capable of bending and dipping underneath taller tackles. No game demonstrated his prowess better than his performance against South Carolina, seen at the top of the page. Thanks to his athleticism and high football IQ, he projects as an outside linebacker in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme.
The combine will aid in his draft stock soaring if he times well. Surratt will likely hear his name called at some point on day three as a project who could contribute on special teams and sub-packages.
