The Chicago Bears need to make moves to improve for the 2020 season. Here are some they should make this offseason.

The Chicago Bears finished a frustrating 2019 season with a record of 8-8. The offense struggled mightily and the defense wasn’t as dominating as it was in 2018.

Some people think that wholesale changes need to be made. They want general manager Ryan Pace, head coach Matt Nagy, and defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano gone. They’d also love to have a new quarterback, an entirely new offensive line, and a revamped wide receiver and tight end corps.

These are moves you can make on the Madden video game but not in real life. There are contracts and dead money and salary cap questions that prevent all that from happening. Besides, there were only two games in which the Bears were just blown out — against the New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs. All the other games they were competitive and had a chance to win. That means a complete rebuild isn’t necessary.

Yes, I sound like Pace and Nagy. However, it doesn’t make it any less true. A bounce here or a completed pass there and things could have been different. It was the same that happened in 2018. Including the playoff game, the Bears had 11 games decided by seven points or less. They finished with 12 wins but could have had a lot less. It worked out in 2018 but didn’t in 2019.

The Bears do need to improve in order to win more of those 50/50 games. There are areas that severely underperformed and need to turn things around. But it could take just a move or two in a couple of areas to change things.

The Bears also need to free up some salary cap space to be able to make the moves necessary to improve and compete in 2020. That means some big and unpopular cuts that need to be made.

Here are some moves the Chicago Bears should make this offseason to improve their play in 2020.
