Chicago Bears: 7 Offseason moves to make for 2020 to return to playoffs
Tweak the wide receivers unit
The Chicago Bears’ wide receivers corps had its ups and downs. The one receiver who was consistently good throughout the season was Allen Robinson. He finished the season with 98 catches for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns. He did that despite Trubisky’s struggles.
The first thing the Chicago Bears need to do is to re-sign Robinson. He’s been a leader on and off the field. He took it upon himself to take the other receivers this offseason and work out with them. That is what a leader does.
The Bears decided to have Taylor Gabriel as an outside receiver opposite of Robinson. The problem was that he wasn’t an outside receiver. Yes, he did have his moments but he is more of a slot receiver.
Gabriel may be one of the added cuts I mentioned earlier. He and Anthony Miller are similar players. Miller, however, had another very good season. If the Bears had to choose between Gabriel and MIller, it’s no contest. Miller has shown that he can make a big play when needed. Look for a cut or a trade (perhaps a draft-day trade?).
With Gabriel out, the Bears need to pick someone up. They should find a receiver in the draft. They should also give Ridley a chance to be that outside receiver. He has great body control, runs great routes, and has good hands. I think he’ll be able to make the same amazing catches that Alshon Jeffery did when he was in Chicago.
