Chicago Bears: 7 Offseason moves to make for 2020 to return to playoffs
Trubisky needs to have competition
Okay, so I saved the biggest one for last. What happens with Trubisky? Well, in his end of season presser, Pace indicated that the Chicago Bears are going into the 2020 season with Trubisky as the starter, per ESPN:
"Yes, we do feel comfortable with Trubisky as the starter… but the first thing that comes to mind for me is just consistency. You see moments, you see games, but for him the issue is stringing together better consistency. So you have the peaks and valleys… Mitch is our starter. We believe in Mitch, and we believe in the progress that he’s gonna continue to make."
That isn’t a problem in my book. It isn’t, that is, as long as Trubisky has some competition. Pace said they plan on having Trubisky as the starter. Many plans need adjusting.
I’m not sure Trubisky will ever be anything other than a backup. He takes too long to process plays, he doesn’t find the open receiver on too many occasions, and when he does he misses him. I lost count of how many times he misses wide on an out route pass. He could, however just be one of those players who bloom late. He might be able to flip the switch and it all comes together. On the other hand, that switch might never be flipped.
In the event the latter happens, the Bears need a backup plan. They need to have someone who can push Trubisky so he can get better. The team had a small village of players compete for the kicker’s job. The idea was to have them compete because the competition would bring their best out. Why can’t they do the same at quarterback?
The NFL is a copycat league. We saw how well the Tennessee Titans fared with Ryan Tannehill as their backup. He might have been thrown away by the Miami Dolphins but he had some good experience as a starter so he could step in if needed. No one expected him to do what he did, but that is why he was there.
The Bears need to find a veteran quarterback who can push Trubisky. Trubisky needs to feel that the quarterback position isn’t just being given to him. He has to feel that he earned the job. He’s cruised through his first three seasons knowing that no matter what, he is the starter. Chase Daniel was never going to challenge him.
In 2020, Trubisky needs to feel the pressure of fighting for his spot. If not, the Bears might be waiting too long and waste the assets they have at the moment.
