2. Secondary can make big plays

One of the things that has gone a bit overlooked about the Packers this season because of the breakout season from their pass-rush has been the performance of their secondary. This group, which they addressed in the offseason by signing Adrian Amos and drafting Darnell Savage to join the likes of Jaire Alexander and Kevin King, has played quite well, specifically with making plays.

The Packers are actually tied for the lead among remaining playoff teams in turnover margin from the regular season at +12 (the Seahawks were also +12). Part of that is due to the fact that they don’t turn the ball over, having just 13 turnovers on the entire regular season (four interceptions, nine fumbles). However, the defense, particularly in coverage, has made many plays.

Green Bay was tied for third in the NFL in interceptions this season with 17, meaning they averaged more than one per game. Furthermore, Alexander and King combined for 32 passes defensed while Tramon Williams, Amos and Savage combined for 21 in their own right. This is a team that makes life hard on opposing pass-catchers.

While this group isn’t perfect and can be beaten at times, they are playmakers on the back end. And nothing changes a tightly contested playoff game like a quick change of possession that could flip the field, put points on the board and so on. The Packers have a group that’s proven capable of that type of performance, which can prove huge for them.
