The New Orleans Saints stalled against the Vikings in the Wild Card Round so what can they do in the 2020 NFL Draft to build after the playoff loss?

Though the New Orleans Saints were playing in the Wild Card Round of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, many around the league had them circled as a potential Super Bowl contender. The No. 3 seed in the NFC coming off a 13-3 regular season, Sean Payton and Drew Brees’ squad appeared on track to make a run to the Big Game as they opened up the postseason against the Vikings.

That belief in the Saints made their Wild Card Round showing — at home in the Superdome, no less — all the more surprising. Brees looked out of sorts as Michael Thomas was held in check (by his standards at least) and the offense failed to click like it had for much of the year. And with Kirk Cousins and the Vikings doing enough, the Saints were sent packing after one game.

Yes, many fans have cried foul regarding New Orleans’ exit as the game-winning touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph in overtime could’ve seen the Vikings tight end flagged for pass interference. He did push off but the no-call was not nearly as egregious as the one against the Rams in last year’s postseason.

Regardless of what the officials should or should not have called, however, the Saints 2020 offseason has begun. There are big questions that now must be answered. The offense has the future of Brees to consider but also needs to get more weapons for Brees or another quarterback to work with outside of Thomas.

Furthermore, the defense could use some reinforcements as well. The secondary moving forward is looking a bit shallow, as are the linebacker corps and defensive line. Thus, the 2020 NFL Draft can be valuable for New Orleans as they look to improve this roster.

Though the Saints don’t own a second-round nor a seventh-round pick, they can still make some big moves with the five selections they do own. With that in mind, let’s venture into a full 7-round mock draft for New Orleans.
