New York Jets: 3 Things at top of 2020 offseason to-do list
It’s time for the New York Jets to finally turn things around. Here are three things that general manager Joe Douglas must accomplish in the 2020 offseason.
Now that the dust has settled on the 2019 New York Jets season, it’s time to look ahead to the upcoming 2020 campaign, now eight months away. Gang Green finished 7-9 last year thanks, in large part, to a very soft schedule. There is still much work to be done.
General manager Joe Douglas will be under a lot of pressure to get this hapless franchise turned around. The Patriots are old and vulnerable and the AFC East may finally be up for grabs. It’s time for the green and white to start the new decade as a legitimate contender for an AFC playoff berth.
Here are three things that Douglas and Jets management must accomplish before the start of training camp.
3. Revamp the offensive line
There is no doubt about it: Gang Green had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL in 2019. Just ask Le’Veon Bell.
The three-time Pro Bowl halfback suffered through one of the bleakest seasons of his career with 789 rushing yards (3.2 yards per carry) and four total touchdowns. It’s easy to see why as a star who is known for waiting for holes to open simply had no holes to run through. The offensive line of Kelvin Beachum, Alex Lewis, Jon Harrison, Tom Compton and Brandon Shell simply didn’t cut it.
Douglas will have to use the free-agent market and NFL Draft to fix this mess. What options does he have?
Possible free agents include left tackle Greg Robinson of Cleveland (27 years old), right tackle Daryl Williams of the Panthers (28) and guard B.J. Finney of Pittsburgh (28).
The Jets own the 11th overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft so some viable possibilities include left tackle Andrew Thomas of Georgia, Austin Jackson of USC or Louisville’s Mehki Becton in the initial round. Later round possibilities include guard Solomon Kindley of Georgia and center Nick Harris of Washington.
Any way you slice it, Douglas will be very busy come March (free agency) and the NFL Draft (April). This has to be priority No. 1 for Gang Green. The offensive line has been overlooked for too long. Sam Darnold deserves better.
