3. New England Patriots

Anytime young quarterbacks are part of the conversation in 2020 or beyond, the New England Patriots are going to find their way into the discussion. For two decades, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have run roughshod through the NFL, capturing six Super Bowl rings along the way.

However, Brady is now 42 years old and will be 43 by the time the 2020 season kicks off. And for what it’s worth, there has been plenty of speculation about whether or not he’s with the Patriots in 2020 as his contract is up and a new deal has not been reached. For my money, that’s a leverage play on the part of Brady to either get more money or get more roster help. But that doesn’t change the fact that the need for a successor is becoming direr by the year.

Jarrett Stidham caught some fire in the preseason but that’s still a gamble on the part of the Patriots to believe he can be the guy to ultimately take Brady’s spot in New England. He’s a developmental prospect that still has plenty of warts, which is not the case when it comes to a player like Trevor Lawrence.

At some point, we are going to see the New England Patriots make an aggressive move at quarterback and the 2021 NFL Draft could be that sweet spot, especially with a prospect like Lawrence hanging in the balance. If that’s when they choose to move on or start the handing-off process with Brady, they could make a big trade to get the Clemson star.
