4. Logan Thomas (6-6, 250 pounds)

Logan Thomas was originally drafted as a quarterback out of Virginia Tech in the fourth round of the 2014 draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played in just two games in his rookie season. He spent the next two seasons playing on practice squads until the Buffalo Bills decided to try to move him over to tight end.

At his size, he’d be a good target for the quarterback. As a project, he’s improved his numbers each of the last three seasons he played as a tight end. In 2019, he had 16 catches for 173 yards (10.8 yards per catch) and a touchdown. I think he’s about to prove his worth as a tight end.

Thomas could be a good backup for Burton. If he improves again in 2020 he could very well find himself on the field together with Burton, causing matchup troubles on opposing defenses. Imagine Allen Robinson, Cordarrelle Patterson, Burton and Thomas, all 6-2 or taller and weighing 220-250 pounds, in the red zone. That gives quarterback Mitchell Trubisky a lot of choices.

Thomas’ 173 yards were second among the Detroit Lions’ tight end group. That isn’t bad considering quarterback Matthew Stafford missed eight games in 2019. With more passes thrown his way, he’ll get better and be a dependable target.
