The Kansas City Chiefs have punched their ticket to Super Bowl 54 but would they rather face the Packers or the 49ers for the Lombardi Trophy?

By way of beating Tennessee and the AFC Championship Game being scheduled for earlier on Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs were the first team to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LIV. Now they await the winner of the NFC Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

As the Packers and 49ers are the top-two seeds in the NFC this season, it stands to reason that the Chiefs are going to have a tough matchup in the Super Bowl no matter which team they face. But if they had their choice, which team would Kansas City rather face as they try to earn Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid their first Lombardi Trophy.

It’s worth noting first off that the Packers and Chiefs faced off in the regular season. Green Bay emerged victorious from that game, 31-24. While that may be the case, Matt Moore was Kansas City’s starting quarterback for that game while Mahomes recovered from his knee injury. And considering they still held their own, you have to believe they might be able to take the edge.

What’s interesting about a possible matchup between San Francisco and Kansas City is the speed that would be on the field for Reid’s club. As talented as the Niners defense is (and offense too), the Chiefs offense has so many weapons in the vein of Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and even Mecole Hardman that pose matchup nightmares for a defense like the 49ers’.

Though he will have proven himself by getting to the Super Bowl at this point, the deciding factor as to which would be the better matchup might be the quarterback. While the Packers have Aaron Rodgers, a surefire future Hall-of-Famer and veteran with a Lombardi Trophy already to his credit, Jimmy Garoppolo remains unproven at this level. That could give KC the opportunity to overwhelm the inexperienced quarterback.

Quite frankly, the Chiefs might be too much for either the Packers or 49ers. But given the choice, Kansas City would like to face the Niners with a Super Bowl victory on the line. They just have more advantages for Kansas City to exploit and, ultimately, give them a better chance of getting a ring.
