The Tennessee Titans saw their magical playoff run end against KC but how can they build off that in free agency and the draft in the 2020 offseason?

After squeaking into the 2020 NFL Playoffs, there were quite a few people expecting a quick postseason exit by the Tennessee Titans. Instead, they captured the hearts of many football fans by first knocking off the Patriots in the Wild Card Round and then taking down the top-seeded Ravens in the Divisional Round. It was a remarkable run for the Titans to make it to the AFC Championship Game.

One win away from the Super Bowl, though, the thoughts of the Big Game were too tantalizing to ignore. Unfortunately for the Titans, however, that was where their magical playoff run ended. As Derrick Henry was unable to control the action the way he had and as the defense had few answers for the Chiefs offense, Tennessee fell by 11 points in the conference title game.

So after a 9-7 regular season and the run to the AFC Championship, it’s on to the 2020 offseason for the Titans. And with what this team showed after Ryan Tannehill took over the offense after the first six games, it’s clear that the future is bright with a talented roster. Having said that, there is never time to stop improving.

Therefore, these are five moves in free agency and the NFL Draft that the Titians need to make in the 2020 offseason in order to keep building.

5. Re-sign Derrick Henry, tag Ryan Tannehill

As this is the last year of the current CBA, there is somewhat of a loophole in the rulebook. While teams can normally only use one or the other for the franchise and transition tags, the final year of the agreement allows an organization to use both for the 2020 season. And there has been talk of Tennessee taking advantage of that to tag both Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill.

The running back is coming off of a year where he was the NFL’s rushing champion and went on an unprecedented tear to make it to the AFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Tannehill was the spark for the offense that turned them around from a 2-4 start to get them into the postseason. Subsequently, they likely want to keep both around.

However, the better move is to just lock up Henry with a front-loaded deal that won’t hamstring them for five years while tagging Tannehill. We know what the back is at this point and how critical he is to the offense while the jury is still out on the quarterback. Keep Henry around for the long haul while giving yourself one more year to see fully what you have in Tanny.
