Green Bay Packers: 3 Defensive coordinator candidates to replace Mike Pettine
By Joe Kipp
1. Wade Phillips
Wade Phillips is going to be a popular name for most defensive coordinator vacancies around the NFL this offseason, and rightfully so. Phillips has extensive experience coaching in the NFL (43 years), including nine years as a head coach.
As defensive coordinator, Phillips won Super Bowl 50 in 2015 with the Denver Broncos, helping to guide one of the best defenses of the decade. He was named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year that season after the Broncos finished having allowed the least amount of total yards and fourth-lowest points in the entire league.
After the 2016 season, the Broncos and Phillips parted ways. He latched on with the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator. In his three years with the Rams, his defenses ranked 19th, 19th and 13th, respectively, in total yards allowed, and 12th, 20th and 17th, respectively, in points allowed. He was not retained at the end of the 2019 season.
The Packers could use the experience Phillips brings to the table, especially with a young head coach in Matt LaFleur. At 72 years old, it remains to be seen if Phillips even wants to coach in 2020, though. If he does, Green Bay should absolutely give him an interview.
