2019 NFL Draft: Grading every first-round pick after rookie year
9. Ed Oliver, DT, Buffalo Bills
2019 Stats: 43 total tackles, 5 sacks, 2 passes defended, 1 forced fumble
Despite his overwhelming talent and potential, we knew there was potential for Ed Oliver to struggle early on in his NFL career. Coming into the league at the ripe age of 21, he had a way to go in his development, even with all of the raw upside he brought to the table.
So it’s no surprise that his 2019 campaign was characterized by ebbs and flows. Coming off a strong preseason, Oliver earned a starting role along a stout Buffalo Bills defensive front. And yet, through the first seven games (all starts), his impact wasn’t all that noticeable. There were some flashes, but not what you’d expect from the No. 9 overall pick.
When he was benched in Week 9, it seemed like Oliver’s season was headed south. That, however, was not the case. Instead, it appeared to motivate the young defensive lineman, driving him to notch four sacks in his next three appearances. He was far more effective down the stretch, allowing Bills fans the ability to move their fingers away from the panic button.
There’s still room for Oliver to digress, but that’s the case for any athlete regardless of sport. The Bills knew they were getting a raw talent when they took him, but the Houston alum’s future still seems bright after an impressive second half of his rookie season.
