The Kansas City Chiefs are readying for Super Bowl 54 against the 49ers but it’s been quite a while since the franchise has made it to this stage.

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid‘s Kansas City Chiefs making it to Super Bowl LIV doesn’t feel like a mistake in the slightest. From Mahomes’ breakout and MVP-winning campaign in 2018, it felt like they would play for the Lombardi Trophy sooner rather than later. Now, they’ll have that opportunity on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 in Miami when they match up with the San Francisco 49ers.

As Chiefs fans will surely tell you though, seeing Kansas City playing in the Super Bowl is not something that is commonplace in the modern history of the NFL. In fact, a large contingent of fans wasn’t even alive the last time that the Chiefs were playing in the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t played in the Super Bowl in 50 years. Their last appearance was in Super Bowl IV, played on Jan. 11, 1970 to crown the champion from the 1969 season. Led by eventual Super Bowl MVP Len Dawson, the Chiefs triumphed over the Vikings with a 23-7 victory.

Previously, however, the Chiefs actually represented the AFL in Super Bowl I. Unfortunately, they were defeated in that contest by the Green Bay Packers, losing 35-10. Those are the only two appearances for Kansas City in the Big Game, though they did win an AFL Championship in 1962 prior to the merger and when the Chiefs were the Dallas Texans.

There have been a couple of instances of Kansas City getting close to the Big Game but not getting over the hump. The Chiefs lost in the AFC Championship Game in the 1993-94 and 2018-19 seasons, falling to the Bills and Patriots, respectively, in those contests.

Sunday’s matchup in Super Bowl LIV will be just the Kansas City Chiefs’ third Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. However, as Mahomes and Reid look to build a dynasty, they would love to not just make their first trip in 50 years but also hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in five decades as well.
