Peering into the NFL crystal ball for 2025, Pro Bowl changes to make, Super Bowl stats to know and more in this week’s NFL Notebook.

It’s finally here: Super Bowl Week. It’s the bittersweet week that celebrates the final game of the NFL (and football in general) until August. While I would have been awestruck over a Chiefs-Packers championship (a repeat of the first Super Bowl), I’ll gladly take Chiefs-49ers instead.

As with any Super Bowl Week, you’ll likely see the same storylines over and over again. From Raheem Mostert’s emergence from the unknown to Andy Reid’s rebound following his firing from Philadelphia, I expect you to be an expert on all things Chiefs and 49ers by Sunday.

Of course, there may be a couple of things you’re not aware of. A few important stats to know:

  • In the last 15 seasons, teams with 55 or more sacks in a season are 6-0 in the Super Bowl. The 49ers lead the NFL with 57 sacks (postseason included).
  • The “away” team has won 30 of 53 Super Bowls. Since 2010, the “away” team has won all but two championships. The 49ers are the “away” team this season.
  • The 49ers are the third team to reach the Super Bowl after losing four or more games the previous season. The only team to finish 4-12 and win the Super Bowl the following season: the 1999-2000 St. Louis Rams.
  • Since 2000, the team wearing white has won all but four times. The most recent example was the Eagles in 2018, the first time since 2010. The 49ers will be wearing white.

Does that mean San Fransisco will win? Of course not. I see this being a good, back-and-forth game. The Chiefs will win if they can get stop the 49ers’ rushing game, among other things. The 49ers will win if they contain Patrick Mahomes, among other things. I was tempted to make a Super Bowl prediction here, but I’ll wait until later in the week via Twitter, though I’m leaning towards San Fransisco.

For now, what else is going on that’s noteworthy?

  • The Pro Bowl, and one change I would make (okay, two changes)
  • The Senior Bowl, and which prospects earned some extra cash
  • The idea of a 17-game season, and why it hinges on one thing
  • Eli Manning’s retirement, and why I’m hesitant to deem him a first-ballot Hall of Famer
  • College football awards, and which quarterback could be the next big thing
  • 2025 NFL award predictions, and why they will be wrong
  • And yes, a few moments dedicated to Kobe Bryant. (May he, Gianna and the seven others on board the helicopter all rest in peace)

Like I said last week, I’m content with the Pro Bowl, but maybe making a small change would help the game.
