As many prepare to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers play in Super Bowl 54, we look back at five teams who blew their big chance to play in Miami.

Super Bowl LIV is just about here. In just a few days, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers clash to be the top dog of the NFL’s 100th season.

Both teams had their ups and downs on the path to the title. The 49ers started the season 8-0 but after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks found themselves in second place in the NFC West and the fifth seed overall in the NFC. They faced some tough games, including a toe-to-toe fight against the New Orleans Saints and a tough rematch against the Seahawks. They came out on top and stayed home for the playoffs.

The Chiefs faced hard times as well. Reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes injured his knee in Week 7 and fans held their breaths as they found out how serious the injury was. Mahomes missed just two games, however, and even though he lost to the Tennessee Titans in his return, he led the Chiefs into the AFC Championship game where he and the Chiefs won their rematch against the Titans.

While we laud these two teams and their road to Super Bowl LIV, we take a look at some other teams who had their own opportunities to get to Miami but missed out. These teams missed out for a variety of reasons. Some had opportunities to set themselves up during the regular season to have a better road to the championship but lost key games.

Others just missed out during playoff games. One play here or there and they ended up losing and having their season end. Here are five teams who missed their prime opportunity to play in Super Bowl LIV.
