Chicago Bears: 7-Round 2020 mock draft post-Senior Bowl
As I mentioned, the Chicago Bears spent a lot to acquire Mack. They traded two first-round picks, a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick to the Oakland Raiders for him, a 2020 second-round and a fifth-round pick. Then they turned around and signed him to a record six-year, $141 million deal, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Mack made an instant impact on the Bears defense, transforming it from a good defense to a great one. In 2019, however, with Akiem Hicks getting hurt and missing most of the season and Leonard Floyd not being an effective pass rusher, Mack faced double and triple teams regularly. Even so, he led the league in quarterback pressures. He had a Pro Bowl season but it wasn’t the usual dominant Mack season.
The Bears need someone who can attract some double teams to help Mack work with more space. If a defense keys in on Mack, then the other pass rusher needs to create havoc himself.
Khalid Kareem is that player. At 6-4 and weighing 265 pounds, he is bigger than Floyd. Floyd’s skinny frame caused problems in his pass rush. The Bears tried to bulk him up but it just didn’t work. Once a lineman latched on to him, his rush was done. Too many times Mack, taking on a double team, got to the quarterback before Floyd, who was one-on-one.
That doesn’t happen to Kareem. He has the strength to win battles. While you see how big he is, he also has speed in his game. He has a good first step and can blow past blockers.
Kareem does a good job of lowering and narrowing his shoulders to give the tackle a smaller target. He also has several moves to get free and get into the opposing backfield.
Kareem has a high motor and would learn so much from Mack. He’ll be a sponge and pick up a lot from watching greatness.
