3 Dallas Cowboys who need contract extensions in 2020
By Randy Gurzi
The Dallas Cowboys waited far too long to extend DeMarcus Lawrence and Dak Prescott, which will cost them. They can’t make similar mistakes with these 3 players.
There was a time when the Dallas Cowboys were way too quick to give out extensions. A good example was beck in 2009 when they gave Terell Owens an extension but then released him before the next season began.
Clearly, the front office and coaching staff wasn’t on the same page there. Thankfully, they don’t seem to hand out money to players they don’t want anymore, but they have kind of gone too far in the opposite direction and now are hesitant to pay even the ones they do want.
Case in point — DeMarcus Lawrence. After a breakout campaign in 2017, the Cowboys slapped Lawrence with the franchise tag. At the time, he was expected to earn roughly $17 million per season but Dallas balked and thus the tag came. In the end, Lawrence increased his stock and mow makes north of $20 million.
The same is about to happen with Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper and Byron Jones. All three were in the final season of their respective contracts in 2019 and all three increased their values. Now Dallas is stuck trying to pinch pennies to pay for everyone.
It won’t be easy, but maybe they will learn from this. If so, here are three players they need to consider locking up during the 2020 season — and one they need to agree to terms with as soon as the year is over.
One for after the season: Michael Gallup, Wide Receiver
Right now, Michael Gallup cannot sign an extension. Per the current CBA, he can only do so after completing his first three seasons in the NFL. That will happen once he wraps up this coming year. And he’s coming off a big season.
While Amari Cooper was considered the No. 1 target, Gallup was actually the big-play guy ‚— and was more consistent than Cooper. He was so good that he even cracked the 1,000-yard mark despite missing three games due to knee surgery.
So while Dallas can’t sign him now, they need to make sure that as soon as he’s eligible, they get something locked up. Otherwise, they will just cost themselves more money as they have already done with Lawrence, Prescott, Cooper, and Jones.
