The Green Bay Packers make the leap to contender status in this 7-round 2020 mock draft after falling well short in the NFC Championship Game this year.

There’s no questioning the fact that the Green Bay Packers are a high-quality football team. In the first season under new head coach Matt LaFleur, they went 13-3 in the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the NFC, then handled their business against the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round. But when they got to the NFC Championship Game, the bigger picture came into focus.

As the San Francisco 49ers ran all over them to jump out to a monster lead and then just turn on the cruise control to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LIV, it was clear that the Packers were the quintessential team that is very good but is also not yet ready to compete for a Lombardi Trophy. Thus, the 2020 NFL Draft will be critical for the Packers to try and make that leap to being a contender.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has already said this offseason that they will be much quieter in free agency this offseason after making big moves in 2019. Thus, the NFL Draft comes into focus to try and get Aaron Rodgers in position to make one more run at winning a Super Bowl as he enters the back-half of his 30s.

While the Packers are in great position moving forward in many spots, there are some critical needs to address. The wide receiver group is chief among those issues as Green Bay needs to get big-time depth behind Davante Adams in this group to help the offense. The same can be said for the tight end position as well.

Beyond that, Green Bay’s own impending free agents could necessitate big needs at offensive tackle and linebacker. Even if they retain their guys, those groups could use more depth and youth as they try to make the jump. Furthermore, cornerback and the defensive front could use depth additions as well.

The Packers own all of their picks in every round while also having extra sixth- and seventh-round selections. Thus, they can make a big splash and become true contenders with the right 2020 NFL Draft haul. Let’s see if they get that in this 7-round mock draft for Green Bay.
