The Kansas City Chiefs waited 50 years to hear it but they are Super Bowl champions once again after a terrific comeback to top the 49ers in Super Bowl 54.

Kansas City Chiefs fans dreamed of it last year when Patrick Mahomes took the helm of Andy Reid‘s offense and won NFL MVP in his first full season as the starter. But after falling short last year, the Chiefs can say something that they haven’t been able to in five decades: the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions.

Taking on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV in Miami on Sunday, Reid continued to search for the first Super Bowl victory of his career and seemed to be in the driver’s seat early on in the game. Mahomes and the offense took the first lead of the game but the 49ers then made a big-time run to tie it at 10-10 and then going up by 10 points after that, 20-10.

Mahomes then turned it up — as did the defense — late in the second half. They scored 14 unanswered points and then iced the game with a monumental touchdown from running back Damien Williams to make it 31-20, which was the final score of the game that gave the Chiefs their second Super Bowl victory in franchise history, the first of Reid’s illustrious career.

Let’s take a look back at how it all happened.

Highlights from Super Bowl LIV

While it was San Francisco that took the early 3-0 lead, the Chiefs offense looked the part early on, taking a 7-0 lead over the 49ers with a rushing touchdown from Mahomes:

The Chiefs then took it down the field for three points to take the 10-3 lead, seemingly in control. However, that was when the 49ers started to take control. It was fullback Kyle Juszczyk that tied things up for San Francisco:

The Chiefs nor Niners found the end zone after that fact, taking us into halftime with the game knotted at 10-10. After getting a Robbie Gould field goal after the break though, San Francisco made a huge play with linebacker Fred Warner coming up with a huge pick off of Mahomes:

Raheem Mostert, the hero from the NFC Championship, capped off the drive to capitalize off of the turnover with a touchdown to give the Chiefs the 20-10 run, making it look like the Niners had it in the bag.

But when the chips were down, the explosive Kansas City offense started making plays. First was Mahomes finding Tyreek Hill deep down the field on third-and-15, which put Andy Reid’s club in place for Mahomes to hit Travis Kelce for the touchdown:

After a big stop by the defense, the Chiefs stepped up in the biggest of moments. There were just over five minutes left on the clock but they made it look effortless as drove down the field 65 yards quickly, ending things with a close but confirmed touchdown from Damien Williams to give Kansas City the 24-20 lead:

However, with the 49ers getting the rock back once more, they had over two minutes to try and overtake Kansas City once more. Big plays from Mostert and then Garoppolo finding Kendrick Bourne got San Francisco rolling right away. The Chiefs defense came up with the biggest stop of the game though, forcing a turnover on downs.

The game wasn’t over just yet as Kansas City got the ball back while the Niners had all three timeouts but Damien Williams put the exclamation mark on the game as he broke a big one on second down and took it to the house.
