Chicago Bears: 5 Tight end prospects to target in 2020 NFL Draft
Brycen Hopkins is another tight end who can help an offense in a variety of ways. He can run the entire route tree and can play from a number of alignments. He possesses good athletic ability and has the footwork to avoid contact and get yards after the catch.
Hopkins isn’t a very physical player but he does a great job at making contested catches. He is good at concentrating with bodies around him and he possesses strong hands to grab the ball at its highest point and bring it in.
Hopkins is explosive at the snap and that helps him run away from linebackers. If a defense uses a quicker player on him, that player will usually be too small to stop him.
While many feel that Kmet is the top tight end prospect in the draft, they do so by making a lot more assumptions than normal. He was mainly a baseball player early before making football his priority. He has only one season as a starter and while he did well, there isn’t much more there. Does that remind you of a certain quarterback who was in that same situation?
Brycen Hopkins is considered the second-best tight end prospect but he has more on his resume. Kmet had 72 percent of his catches, 74 percent of his yards, and 100 percent of his touchdowns in 2019. He could be a great prospect or he could be a one-year wonder.
Hopkins, on the other hand, has 130 catches for 1,945 yards, and 16 touchdowns. In 2019, he had 61 catches (47 percent) for 830 yards (43 percent) and seven touchdowns (44 percent). Hopkins has more experience and is more NFL-ready than Kmet.
If the Chicago Bears go with a tight end with one of their two second-round picks I’d use it on Hopkins. If I go after a tight end at all, though, I’d go with one of the prospects in the middle rounds.
