Green Bay Packers: 5 Bargain targets in 2020 NFL free agency
By Joe Kipp
3. Tajae Sharpe, WR
Both Breshad Perriman and Phillip Dorsett are deep threats that can beat opponents over the top with speed, but Tajae Sharpe is more of a possession-type receiver that would benefit the Packers in 3rd-and-long situations. The Packers need help at receiver in both areas, and Sharpe is a good candidate to be a bargain free agent.
Drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round of the 2016 draft, Sharpe has never been more than the No. 3 option over his career. In 47 career games, he’s posted 92 receptions for 1,167 yards and eight touchdowns, so he could be looking for the chance to prove his worth on a new team. With A.J. Brown and Corey Davis as the bonafide No. 1 and No. 2 options for the Titans, Sharpe will likely sign elsewhere.
The Packers make sense as a fit for Sharpe for a few reasons. First, coach Matt LaFleur is familiar with Sharpe’s skill-set after serving as offensive coordinator for the Titans in 2018. Sharpe, standing at 6-2 and 200 pounds, would provide veteran depth to a young receiving corps. Titans quarterbacks posted a 127.0 passer rating when targeting Sharpe this past season.
Green Bay has relied on younger, inexperienced receivers to compliment Davante Adams for the past two seasons. It remains unlikely that the Packers would take that sort of risk again after seeing what happens when Adams is the only legitimate option.
