Dallas Cowboys: Tom Brady rumors nothing but noise in the void
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin suggested that Tom Brady could be heading to Big D but that seems like white noise in the offseason void.
The quarterback position of the Dallas Cowboys being in the offseason conversation is far from shocking. How Jerry Jones and the Cowboys plan on retaining Dak Prescott, whether it be via a long-term deal or the franchise tag, was always going to be a topic of discussion. What wasn’t expected, however, was Tom Brady finding his way into the discussion.
And yet, that’s exactly what happened. Pro Football Hall-of-Famer and Cowboys great Michael Irvin said this weekend on a radio show with WEEI in Boston that some “very significant people” in Dallas were saying that the franchise could pursue Brady in free agency as the longtime Patriots quarterback is set to hit the open market for the first time in his long career.
Even in the moment, that seemed incredibly far-fetched. The notion of the Cowboys essentially not paying a quarterback, Prescott, who’s in his mid-20s and, instead, turning their attention to a signal-caller who will be 43 years old at the start of the 2020 season but will still demand north of $30 million per year seemed absurd.
As it turns out, it probably is as absurd of a notion as it appears to be on the surface. Not only did Irvin himself walk his comments back and, in essence, tell us that the “significant people” weren’t decision-makers or members of the Jones family, but Stephen Jones said in a radio interview a month ago the following:
With the totality of what the front office and Mike McCarthy are saying and now Irvin walking his comments back, suffice it to say that this feels a little more like nonsense noise heading into free agency with no real merit behind it.
Did Michael Irvin have conversations with important people (who else is he going to hang out with at this point) that talked about Brady going to the Cowboys while they tagged and traded Prescott? I’m sure those talks did happen. At the same time, it’s safe to bet that “significant” and “able to make decisions in Dallas” are two different things in this instance.
My full expectation is for the Cowboys to re-sign Prescott to some sort of deal. But even if those plans hit a snag, Brady is not the contingency plan here. It’s all just noise with nothing but sound behind it. There’s no smoke or fire here.
