NFL Free Agency 2020: 5 Best landing spots for Teddy Bridgewater
By Samuel Teets
After leading the Saints to five wins, Teddy Bridgewater should get starting quarterback offers in 2020 NFL free agency — but where will he land?
In August of 2018, the New Orleans Saints traded a third-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick and Teddy Bridgewater. Since suffering a non-contact injury before the 2016 season, Bridgewater had appeared in only one regular-season game, but the Saints believed he could back up Drew Brees.
In 2018, Bridgewater appeared in five games and started in Week 17. He played poorly, and the Saints lost. Bridgewater signed a one-year, $7.25 million contract with New Orleans last offseason and continued serving behind Brees.
Brees hit his throwing hand on Aaron Donald‘s helmet early in New Orleans’ Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. He left the game and later underwent surgery on his hand for an apparent ligament injury. Brees did not return until Week 8.
With one of the game’s best quarterbacks sidelined for a few weeks, Bridgewater stepped into the gap. Saints fans hoped the former Pro Bowler could manage games and keep the team in contention long enough for Brees to return and save the day. Instead, Bridgewater thrived.
The Louisville product threw nine touchdowns and only two interceptions as the Saints went on a five-game winning streak. Bridgewater completed 69.7 percent of his pass attempts and posted a 103.7 passer rating during those five games.
By the time Bridgewater returned to the bench in Week 8, he’d built up the public’s trust in his abilities. NFL teams also took notice. Now, after four years of rehabbing and riding the bench, Bridgewater will get starting offers in free agency.
