NFL Free Agency 2020: 5 Best landing spots for Teddy Bridgewater
By Samuel Teets
1. Los Angeles Chargers
While the Saints are a good fit for Bridgewater, it feels like the team will inevitably choose to keep Brees instead. In that case, Los Angeles looks like the best landing spot for the six-year veteran.
Unlike the Saints, who may retain their aging quarterback, the Chargers will part ways with Philip Rivers this offseason. This is a team one year removed from a 12-4 season. While adding Bridgewater alone might not put Los Angeles on that level again, the move would at least get them to 8-8.
The Chargers lost nine games by seven points or less in 2019. Four of those losses were by three points or less. If Los Angeles wins all four of those games, the Chargers finish the year 9-7 and maybe sneak into the playoffs down the line.
While Rivers helped the Chargers for years, he hurt the team this past season. The 38-year-old threw 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions and finished with the third-worst passer rating of his 14 years as a starter. Even if Bridgewater doesn’t live up to the hype he generated during his five-game stint with New Orleans, besting Rivers’ 2019 performance won’t take much.
Even if Melvin Gordon leaves Los Angeles in free agency, the offense still boasts weapons. While the offensive line raises some questions, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams both crossed the 1,000-yard threshold this past season. Austin Ekeler produced 993 receiving yards and 557 rushing yards as well.
While the offense may lose Gordon and Hunter Henry, all of Los Angeles’s key defensive players will return in 2020. Unlike in Indianapolis, Bridgewater can count on defensive help in L.A. The Chargers finished sixth in yards allowed per game last season and allowed the second-fewest offensive plays.
With or without Bridgewater, the Chargers can be a good team in 2020. If he wants to play for an immediate contender with an offensive and defensive already in place, Los Angeles looks like the best spot.
