Denver Broncos build around Drew Lock in 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Lucas Schuh
The best thing an NFL team can do for a young quarterback prospect is to surround him with offensive weapons, hence the Broncos take another receiver to kick off their three third-round picks. Van Jefferson is an incredible wide receiver prospect. The main thing that Jefferson excels in is his technique and route-running ability.
Jefferson has an excellent release off of the line and knows how to work with leverage. Jefferson also knows how to work angles on defensive backs. He doesn’t need elite athleticism to make cornerbacks and safeties get turned around because of how refined of a route-runner he already is.
He also possesses great contested-catch ability and terrific hands overall. The one thing Jefferson lacks is high-end athleticism that may hold him back from being a top-tier receiver in the NFL. Unfortunately, he’s also 24 years old as well, which is on the extremely high side for a draft prospect and limits his development and ceiling.
Jefferson would not only be a good overall prospect to draft for the Broncos but he would be a good fit alongside Higgins and Sutton. While Sutton and Higgins can draw attention and force the ball downfield with their big-play ability, Jefferson can operate from the slot with his ability to run incredible routes.
