Minnesota Vikings: 5 Possible cuts to make in 2020 offseason
2. Stefon Diggs
For the last few seasons, the Minnesota Vikings wide receiving duo of Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen has been one of the more feared and dominant duos in the NFL. But going into the 2020 season, Minnesota might look to move on from half of that stellar duo.
A player that could potentially be on the hot seat and could be someone that the organization either looks to trade this offseason or ends up cutting prior to the start of the 2020 campaign is Diggs.
Before Minnesota would potentially try and ultimately look to cut the wide receiver, you would imagine that the Vikings would look heavily towards the trade market if they felt a separation with Diggs is needed.
There are multiple teams around the NFL that would likely be interested in bringing in Diggs, which could make the trade market a more realistic option, but Minnesota could look long and hard at just straight up cutting the wide receiver if it decided to do so.
While leading the team in receiving yards and yards per reception in 2019, Diggs countered that strong statistical performance while bringing some negative and unwanted attention to the team with some drama-related issues primarily surrounding his role within the offense and the overall performance of the offense.
Often times, Diggs would be very open with frustrations he held when talking to the media before or after games, while also displaying his frustration openly on the sidelines on a few separate occasions during the year.
That ultimately could make the Vikings think that parting ways with Diggs either via trade or by cutting him could make for the best situation for both parties.
In 2018, Diggs signed a five-year, $81 million contract extension with the Vikings. The 2019 campaign marked the second year of that deal, which will expire following the 2023 year, with the wide receiver earning around $14.4 million per season on average during that five year span.
If Minnesota isn’t able to find a trade partner to work out a deal for Diggs and if it is focused on moving on from him, the Vikings could ultimately cut Diggs ahead of the 2020 season.
