NFL Trade Rumors: 5 Blockbuster trades the NFL needs in 2020 offseason
By Joe Kipp
Former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera now resides in the nation’s capital, so it stands to reason that an old friend could be joining soon. While it’s unlikely that the Washington Redskins would trade for Cam Newton, the idea can’t be fully counted out.
Drafted first overall in 2011, Newton was the starting quarterback for every season that Rivera was the head coach in Carolina. And while the Redskins may have their potential future franchise quarterback in Dwayne Haskins, it’s important to remember that Rivera was not a part of the staff that drafted Haskins last offseason.
Rumors have swirled the past few months that the Panthers could look to trade Newton, especially with the transition of a new coaching staff led by new head coach Matt Rhule. Rhule may want to get ‘his guy’ at quarterback, which means Newton could be on his way out. The extra draft capital garnered from a potential Newton trade would help the Panthers in the upcoming draft to potentially trade up and get their future starter.
It’s not unreasonable to think the Panthers would abide by some of Newton’s wants, either. If one of those requests just so happened to do with his former coach, the Redskins may be able to pry him away for 2020 second- and 2020 fifth-rounders, as Newton is in the last year of his current contract.
