Part of this potential trade is contingent upon what the Dallas Cowboys do with Dak Prescott and the quarterback position. If the team elects to sign Prescott to a long-term deal, then it makes sense to trade for a legitimate threat at tight end — something Dak hasn’t had his entire career with the Cowboys.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard makes sense as a potential trade target for both parties. Howard has fallen out of favor under first-year head coach Bruce Arians, and the Cowboys are in desperate need of a playmaker at the position.

Jason Witten, who turns 38 in May, is an unrestricted free agent. Meanwhile, the team’s de facto No. 1 tight end in Blake Jarwin hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire when he’s been on the field. In three seasons in the NFL, Jarwin has a combined total of 58 catches for 672 yards and six touchdowns. Dalton Schultz is the team’s other option, who has 13 career receptions in two seasons.

Trading for Howard makes a world of sense. The former first-round pick would provide explosive playmaking at the tight end position, along with helping Dak in the red zone. The Cowboys may be able to acquire him for a second-round pick.
