While Jacoby Brissett was serviceable as an interim starter for the Indianapolis Colts, they must move on to find the true successor to Andrew Luck.

The 2019 season did not go as planned for the Indianapolis Colts. At the start of the preseason, they were the odds-on favorite to win the AFC South and had 6-1 odds to win the Super Bowl.

Their franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck, had just come off a season where he completed 67 percent of his passes, threw for 4,600 yards, and tossed 39 touchdowns to only 15 interceptions. The Colts won their 2018 playoff matchup versus the Houston Texans, only to fall to the Kansas City Chiefs a week later.

Nonetheless, entering this past year, the Colts had a bright future ahead of them with Frank Reich at head coach, a dominant offensive line, a Defensive Rookie of the Year in Darius Leonard and, most importantly, a potential MVP quarterback. As you all know, the hype train went off the rails after Luck announced his retirement two weeks before the start of the regular season.

While the pain will probably not subside for Colts fans until they find their next Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett held down the fort rather well given the circumstances. He started off the season hot; in his first seven weeks, Brissett led the Colts to a 5-2 record by throwing for an average of 227 yards per game and tossing 14 touchdowns to only three interceptions. He completed nearly 65 percent of his passes in that span and kept the Colts in the thick of the hunt for a division title.

Unfortunately, his success was unsustainable. Brissett only threw four more touchdowns after Week 8; the Colts lost seven of their final nine games and were eliminated from postseason contention before the final week of the regular season. While the blame for the Colts’ collapse does not fall entirely on Brissett’s shoulders, his mediocre quarterback play was a contributing factor to a lost season.

This offseason, the Colts will be looking for options to replace Brissett as starting quarterback, as he ranked 34th among quarterbacks in passing yards per game and 26th in total passing touchdowns. Brissett could be a solid backup and start a few games in case of emergency, but his ceiling is limited to solely that of a reserve player.

Given the talent on the Indianapolis roster and resources at their disposal, they need to find a quarterback who can take them to the next level and help them compete for a title.

I am going to look at five options who could replace Brissett as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. Not all of these options will be as easy as signing a free agent or drafting someone with their 15th overall pick; it could take serious negotiating and parting with valuable assets to obtain the cream of the crop. Nonetheless, they are all feasible and would give the Colts an upgrade at the position.
