Minnesota Vikings: 5 Players that should be re-signed for 2020
2. Mackensie Alexander
A strength of the Minnesota Vikings defensive group over the course of the last few seasons has come at the cornerback position while head coach Mike Zimmer has often had a keen eye for finding solid defensive backs.
In 2019, however, that previously dominant defensive back group took somewhat of a step back and we might see some changes take place within that unit going into the 2020 campaign.
Among that group is cornerback Mackensie Alexander, who will head into the offseason as an unrestricted free agent while Minnesota mulls over the idea of whether or not he is worth trying to re-sign for this year and beyond.
In 2019, Alexander completed his fourth professional season in the NFL and with the Vikings after the young cornerback came out of Clemson and was drafted by Minnesota in the second round of the 2016 Draft.
Coming off of a career-best year in 2018, Alexander did take a bit of a step back in 2019 after he appeared in a total of 13 games among the Vikings defense.
During that span, which included him making four starts at cornerback, Alexander finished with 38 tackles and tallied one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, one interception and 0.5 sacks on the year.
Alexander struggled in his first couple of seasons but improved drastically in 2018 and saw his role increase again this past year, with him appearing on the field in over 50 percent of the snaps in 11 of his total 13 games.
As Minnesota makes decisions on who to part ways with and who to re-sign going into 2020, Alexander could be somewhat of a cheaper option than others and the defensive back could continue to see his role expand this season if he returns.
