Everson Griffen is now on the open market in 2020 NFL free agency but which five teams could the standout defensive end sign with this offseason?
Another big-time performer is now on the market in 2020 NFL free agency. In an already loaded class of players, the Minnesota Vikings and defensive end Everson Griffen are parting ways for now as the 32-year-old opted to void the remaining three years on his contract to become a free agent. And now there’s a chance he could be out the door.
Though he’s a veteran at this point, the former fourth-round pick out of USC has been a stud for Minnesota throughout most of his career. Since becoming a starter in 2014, he’s played in 88 games and has averaged 9.5 sacks, 10.8 tackles for loss and 44.9 total tackles per season with the Vikings. Suffice it to say that he can help many teams in need of a defensive end and pass-rush help.
But which teams could be aggressive in 2020 NFL free agency now that he’s on the market? These five clubs would make a good fit and have the money to possibly land Everson Griffen in free agency. (Note: All salary figures are via Over The Cap.)
5. Miami Dolphins
No team in the NFL has as much space under the salary cap than the Miami Dolphins as they enter 2020 NFL free agency as general manager Chris Grier has $89.3 million to operate with this offseason. At the same time, no team has quite as many needs as the Dolphins do while continuing an extensive rebuild.
While the Dolphins are likely to answer some big areas of need in the NFL Draft, they could very well turn to free agency to make some splashes as well. And their pass rush is in dire need of a player like Everson Griffen that can consistently generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Miami picked up Taco Charlton off waivers last season and still has former first-round pick Charles Harris in tow. However, both guys have underperformed in relation to their draft position, so adding a player like Griffen to contribute immediately and also help guide their young players — including any new draft additions — could be quite valuable for the Dolphins.
The big hangup for the Dolphins in making such a signing would be Griffen’s age at 32 years old. He doesn’t exactly fit the plans of the long-term rebuild and the veteran may shy away from Miami for the same reason. If the price is right, however, there’s value in adding him to the Fins.
