3. Minnesota Vikings

Despite the fact that Everson Griffen chose to void the final three years of his contract, there is still a chance that he ends up back with the Minnesota Vikings. Given that’s where he’s spent the entirety of his career to this point, his familiarity with Mike Zimmer and the staff in Minneapolis can’t be found anywhere else and a defense trying to regain its footing could use him a great deal.

While Danielle Hunter is a star at the left defensive end spot, the Vikings are lacking beyond that without Griffen on the roster. Stephen Weatherly is set to hit free agency this offseason and 2017 seventh-round pick Ifeadi Odenigbo hasn’t amounted to much more than a rotational presence in his first three years in the league.

Subsequently, the Vikings have every reason to want to bring back Griffen on a revised contract. However, Minnesota faces some financial restraints this offseason. They have to cut a good deal of money to get under the salary cap to start the new league year. And though they have some obvious potential cuts, such as Xavier Rhodes, they would also like to retain players like safety Anthony Harris.

Due to the issues with the salary cap, it seems somewhat of a realistic concern that the Vikings just won’t be financially flexible enough to work out a new deal with Griffen. Despite the familiarity between the player and team, money talks and the other teams that could use the defensive end have much more to spend on him.
