Dallas Cowboys retool defense in pre-Combine 7-round 2020 mock draft
The Dallas Cowboys have big questions to answer but address holes on defense early in the 2020 NFL Draft in this pre-NFL Combine 7-round mock draft.
Big dominos still need to fall into place for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason as the NFL Combine arrives and the 2020 NFL Draft approaches. The futures of Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper and Byron Jones, among others, remain in flux as they could all enter free agency. Thus, there could be some massive holes to fill on this roster come the NFL Draft.
While that may be true, the most popular belief seems to be that the Cowboys will retain Prescott and Cooper to keep their offensive core, along with Ezekiel Elliott and the offensive line, intact, whether that takes using the franchise tag or not. However, that still leaves plenty of work to do in the draft, particularly on a defense that underperformed last season.
Of course, you could make the argument that, if they just stand pat and re-sign their free agents and leave no flexibility, this might still be a Super Bowl-caliber roster with the chance for a big boom in 2020.
You simply cannot underestimate the negative effect that Jason Garrett had as head coach on this team. The best adage said about him and the Cowboys last year was that Dallas was a 12-4 team with 4-12 coaching, which is why they ended up at 8-8 and out of the playoffs. Mike McCarthy changes that narrative, even if he’s not the most game-changing hire possible.
Even with that argument being valid, this roster isn’t perfect. They need to add depth and fill some holes in the 2020 NFL Draft if they’re going to make a run and compete for a Lombardi Trophy with McCarthy at the helm.
So armed with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and their own pick in every round except for the sixth, what will Jerry Jones‘ club do in late April? As we head into the NFL Combine, let’s explore that with a new 7-round 2020 mock draft for the Dallas Cowboys, which was compiled using The Draft Network’s TDN Premium and the mock draft machine.
But first, we start with a trade for the Cowboys to garner higher value picks later in the draft and still get one of their guys in the first round.
