New York Giants: 5 Top targets in 2020 NFL free agency
By Joe Kipp
3. Chris Harris Jr., CB
One of the most underrated NFL players of the past decade has been cornerback Chris Harris Jr. Harris went undrafted in 2011, signed with the Denver Broncos, and the rest is history. Since then, he’s gone on to be named to four Pro Bowls and three times an AP All-Pro selection, and is largely considered the best slot cornerback in the league.
The Giants had plenty of issues on defense this past season, but cornerback was the most glaring issue by far. Rookies Deandre Baker, Sam Beal and Corey Ballentine were picked on early and often by opposing quarterbacks. Janoris Jenkins performed like a shell of his former self and was later released in December. And slot cornerback Grant Haley was below average, too.
Adding an experienced veteran like Harris would help the growth of New York’s young secondary, both in the locker room and on the field. In 10 seasons, Harris has played in 139 games with 121 starts. He has 20 interceptions and 86 passes defensed during that span.
Adding a proven playmaker at cornerback can change a defense overnight. Harris isn’t going to garner top dollar due to his age (30 years old) and position (slot corner), but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have a marked impact. Spotrac assesses Harris’ market value at $11 million annually.
