The Dallas Cowboys have a big decision to make regarding impending unrestricted free agent cornerback Byron Jones. Dallas played him at safety for the first three seasons of his career, but a permanent move to cornerback in 2018 helped rejuvenate Jones’ career.

The former first-round pick in the 2015 draft will turn 28 years old at the beginning of the 2020 season. Other than his age — slightly older than other players coming off of their rookie contract — the biggest knock against Jones is the fact that he hasn’t forced many turnovers in his five seasons in the league.

Jones has just two interceptions and three forced fumbles in 79 games played (73 starts), and hasn’t recorded an interception since the 2017 season. That said, he still has a knack for the football, forcing 43 passes defensed during his career thus far.

While Jones isn’t a shutdown corner by any means, he’s more than capable of being the No. 1 guy on a defense, particularly one in need like the Giants’. Jones was named to the Pro Bowl and was an AP Second-team All-Pro selection in 2018. His numbers weren’t as impressive this past season, but he still passed the eye test.

Jones’ biggest calling card is the fact that he offers the ability to match up with tight ends. Adding Jones to the Giants’ defense would help change the entire secondary.
