The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV but to remain on top, there is still plenty of room to improve in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Coming off of Patrick Mahomes‘ MVP-winning 2018 season but an AFC Championship Game exit, the Kansas City Chiefs had all the pressure in the world in the 2019 campaign to win the Super Bowl — and they managed to do it in spite of that. Even with injuries to Mahomes, this team clicked on all levels, even on defense. However, that doesn’t mean the Chiefs don’t need more improvement to stay on top, particularly via the 2020 NFL Draft.

Kansas City acquired Tyrann Mathieu last offseason and he was a major boost to their defense as a whole, especially in coverage. The Chiefs also traded for Frank Clark from the Seahawks and, though he was not a superstar, he performed well, stepping up down the stretch. But despite those pieces, the defense isn’t solved.

The Chiefs still need a lot of help on that side of the ball. While Mathieu and Juan Thornhill addressed an issue at safety, cornerback remains an area of need. No one who took snaps at cornerback for Kansas City this past season should be considered a reliable piece for the future of this defense.

On the other side of the ball, however, the Chiefs aren’t 100 percent set as they could use help on the offensive line. Mitchell Schwartz is perhaps the best right tackle in the NFL but they could use upgrades at guard and perhaps at the left tackle spot as well, depending on what’s there for them.

There are few questions that Kansas City is going to be back in the playoffs next season and should be considered one of the favorites to win Super Bowl LV. However, to make that happen, they can’t stand pat and must improve and that’s the aim of this 7-round 2020 mock draft for the Chiefs.
