Kansas City Chiefs bolster defense for Super Bowl repeat in 7-round mock draft
By Lucas Schuh
After franchise tagging Dee Ford and trading him, the Chiefs landed Frank Clark from the Seahawks. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a game-changer for the entire season as they hoped he’d be. Clark, at best, was an average edge player for most of the year and still needs some help opposite him. That is where Charlotte’s Alex Highsmith could step in.
Highsmith is a twitchy edge player who can beat most tackles with his speed and quickness. He’s not all tools and quickness, however, as the Charlotte product has a nice array of pass-rush moves to get the edge.
If Highsmith is beat to the outside, he has a great spin move to the inside that he often uses. That’s just one example of his many different counter-moves, though he doesn’t have any real power moves in his arsenal. At times, Highsmith will also decide what he is going to do before the snap even happens. When that happens, his stubbornness to adapt in the moment causes him issues, something that will continue at the NFL level.
Highsmith won’t take Clark’s starting spot on the roster but he could be a massive help on the edge, particularly in a rotational role or opposite of Clark. He won’t stuff the run on most occasions due to his lack of strength but he knows how to get to the quarterback and that offers great value in a third-round pick.
