NFL Free Agency 2020: Best landing spot for top 20 players
By Phil Watson
Drew Brees will be back for his 20th season in 2020 and it will almost definitely be with the New Orleans Saints.
Brees, now 41, was limited to 11 games because of a thumb injury in 2019, throwing for 2,979 yards and 27 touchdowns with just four interceptions while completing an NFL-best 74.3 percent of his throws … just off his NFL-record 74.4 percent mark in 2018.
But for the second straight season, the Saints were bounced from the playoffs in controversial fashion and Brees, the NFL’s all-time leader with 77,416 passing yards and 547 touchdown passes, wants another bite at the apple.
New Orleans is expected to keep restricted free agent Taysom Hill as a backup while allowing Teddy Bridgewater, who helped the Saints to a 5-0 record while Brees was out, to walk.
According to Zach Links of Pro Football Rumors, Brees has said he’s comfortable as a mentor to Hill as part of a bridge-year scenario to allow coach Sean Payton to make a smooth transition from the veteran Brees to the not-such-a-kid-despite-his-experience Hill.
Brees already has a Super Bowl ring, but a John Elway/Peyton Manning go-out-on-top scenario is always an attractive concept for a veteran quarterback to pursue.
