NFL Free Agency 2020: Best landing spot for top 20 players
By Phil Watson
Robby Anderson did the work and now he’s going to get paid. The former undrafted free agent from Temple signed with the New York Jets in May 2016 and has gone on to start 47 games, catch 207 passes for 3,059 yards and score 20 touchdowns.
Anderson had a breakout year in 2017, catching 63 balls on 114 targets for 941 yards and seven touchdowns, but was limited to 14 games and nine starts due to injuries in 2018.
Last season, the Jets’ quarterback situation affected Anderson’s output. He had 96 targets in 16 games overall, but during the three games Sam Darnold sat out due to mononucleosis, Anderson was targeted just 14 games, making eight catches for 108 yards.
Overall, he caught 52 passes for 779 and five scores. His 92-yard touchdown reception from Darnold against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6 was the second-longest in franchise history behind a 96-yard scoring grab by Wesley Walker from Ken O’Brien against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 8, 1985.
But Bob Glauber of Newsday reported last month that Anderson expected to be back with the Jets.
"“I know they’ve communicated that they do want me back. So, we’ve just got to see how it plays out. I don’t think they’ve gotten to numbers, but I know obviously they want to be at the table and I think they’re planning to be at the table to keep me in-house.”"
Like anyone, Anderson didn’t close the door on other options, either, but if the Jets and the four-year veteran can reach an agreement, he’ll likely be back with Gang Green.
