NFL Free Agency 2020: Best landing spot for top 20 players
By Phil Watson
Jadeveon Clowney came to the Seattle Seahawks last Sept. 1, coming from the Houston Texans in exchange for Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo and a 2020 third-round pick. The former No. 1 overall pick helped the Seahawks to the postseason and a Wild Card Playoff win at Philadelphia before their season was ended at Green Bay the following week.
Along the way, Clowney was second in the NFL with two non-offensive touchdowns, scoring on both an interception and fumble return, while getting three sacks and 31 total tackles, seven for loss, and 13 quarterback hits.
It wasn’t the greatest contract year Clowney could have put together, but the Seahawks would like to keep the six-year veteran, who said after Seattle was eliminated by the Packers last month that playing for a contender was a more important consideration to him than money, per ESPN:
"“I’m trying to get to the Super Bowl by any means. That’s what I’m looking for. Who’s going to get me there? I ain’t looking to get on no sorry team for no money. That ain’t going to fly. I ain’t gonna put my body through all of that just to lose no 16 games, go home with my check. I’d hate that, so that ain’t what I’m doing. “So if I can’t win no Super Bowl, I ain’t going to no team that can’t win.”"
Clowney missed three games and was limited for much of the second half of the season by a core-muscle injury, but still ranked seventh in ESPN’s Pass Rush Win Rate statistic at 24.8 percent. A rusher is credited with a win for beating his block within 2.5 seconds.
He also forced a career-high four fumbles and defensed three passes and in the playoff win at Philadelphia notched 1½ sacks. This will be the first time Clowney can reach unrestricted free agency after playing 2018 on a fifth-year team option and a one-year, $15 million deal last season after the Texans used the franchise tag on him.
