Pick Analysis. player. 443. Scouting Report. Tight End. Notre Dame. Cole Kmet. 2

Pace reiterated his plan on having Trubisky be the starter when the regular season begins. In order to avoid having a repeat of 2019’s struggles, the general manager needs to add help around him.

One of the most important issues for a quarterback is having an effective tight end. The tight end is the quarterback’s security blanket. One of the reasons Trubisky had some success in 2018 was because he had Trey Burton making catches.

He had 54 catches for 569 yards and six touchdowns. Mostly because of injuries, Burton had just 14 catches for 84 yards and no touchdowns. In fact, the entire tight end unit (five players) only had 44 catches for 395 yards and two touchdowns.

A healthy Burton certainly helps Trubisky but the Bears wanted a good one-two punch that involved Adam Shaheen. That did not work so the Bears need someone who could take that spot.

Cole Kmet is the guy who could do what Shaheen couldn’t and a player who could eventually replace Burton as the number one tight end. He adds a good target for Trubisky to target. At 6-6 and 262 pounds, he could add some weight. That will help his run blocking.

When Kmet gets moving downfield, he surprises people with his ability to create some space. Also, he can create some mismatches when he goes out to the slot. If Burton is healthy in 2020, Kmet can ease in. He’ll play a good deal but the pressure won’t be on him and he’ll surprise people with his play.
