Chicago Bears key on offense early in pre-Combine 7-round 2020 mock draft
The Chicago Bears tried an experiment by signing Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to play free safety and moving Eddie Jackson to strong safety. Both players had a good season, with Jackson even making the Pro Bowl.
The problem was that neither had a dominant season. That was especially frustrating for Jackson, who had 8 interceptions and 5 touchdowns in his first two seasons. In 2019, he had two interceptions (one in Week 13 and another in Week 17) and no interceptions.
The prevailing thought is that the Bears move Jackson back to free safety where he can wreak havoc again. That means they let Clinton-Dix walk. He doesn’t have the tools to be a strong safety.
The Bears likely try to pick up a veteran to start alongside Jackson. They’ll still need to add depth so they’ll go with Josh Metellus.
Metellus played both free and strong safety but his skills call for him to play the box (strong) safety. He likes to lay a hard hit on the ball carrier. He has good height that helps him compete for the ball.
People like to think that all their team’s picks are there to be starters. That’s not the case, though. Some picks are there to help with depth and may never end up as starters. I think Deon Bush is one of those players. He is helpful in rotation but I don’t think he’ll ever be a starter. Metellus is on the same boat. He could be a good depth player but may never start a game, and that’s okay.
